Lead Magnet Landing Page Checklist: 8 Things Yours Is Probably Missing

Most lead magnet pages that underperform aren't failing because of the content behind the gate. They're failing because of something small and fixable on the page itself. Here's what's usually missing, in order of how often it's the actual problem.

1. A headline that states the outcome, not the format

"Free Checklist" tells a visitor what kind of file they'll get. It says nothing about what it's for. "The Onboarding Checklist That Cuts Support Tickets in Half" tells them exactly why they should care. If your headline could apply to a dozen unrelated lead magnets, it's not specific enough to convert well.

2. A line that tells the wrong person to leave

This sounds backwards, but it works. A short line like "built for consultants billing hourly, not agencies with a team" does more good than harm. It filters out people who wouldn't have converted into real leads anyway, and it makes the right person feel like the page was written specifically for them.

3. Proof that the content is real, not a placeholder promise

A screenshot of one page from the checklist. A short excerpt. A single line quoting the actual content. Anything that shows the visitor this is a real, finished thing and not a vague promise dressed up as a download. Pages with zero visual proof of the content convert worse than pages that show even a small glimpse of it.

4. A form that only asks for what you'll actually use

Every extra field on a form costs conversions. If you're asking for a phone number, a company name, and a job title, and you're not going to use any of that in the next 30 days, it's just friction. Ask for the email. If you genuinely need more later, ask for it later, once someone's already shown interest.

5. Clarity on what happens immediately after submitting

A visitor filling out a form has a small moment of uncertainty right before they click submit: will this actually work, will I get spammed, is my email about to disappear into a black hole. One short line answering that ("get instant access, no spam, unsubscribe anytime") reduces hesitation right at the moment it matters most.

6. A page that works without scrolling on mobile

Most traffic to a lead magnet page linked from social or a LinkedIn post arrives on a phone. If the headline, the value proposition, and the form aren't visible or close to visible without a lot of scrolling, you're losing people before they've even seen what you're offering. Check the page on an actual phone, not just a resized browser window.

7. No competing links or navigation pulling attention away

A lead magnet page with a full site nav, a dozen footer links, and three other calls to action is fighting itself. The page has one job: get the email. Every extra link is an exit ramp away from that one job. Strip the page down to the offer and the form.

8. A gate that shows enough to build trust before asking for anything

A hard wall, nothing visible until the email is submitted, asks for trust before earning any. A partial reveal, real content shown and then faded into a lock past a certain point, lets the visitor judge quality first. This single change is often the highest-leverage fix on the whole list, because it directly addresses the moment of hesitation right before someone decides whether to convert.

Fixing all eight without rebuilding your stack

Most of these are copy and layout fixes you can make in an afternoon. The gate itself, item 8, is usually the hardest one to fix without rebuilding your setup, because most tools are built around a hard wall by default. If you haven't decided whether the content behind it deserves a gate at all, gated vs. ungated content walks through that call first.

Gatedleads is built around the partial reveal approach specifically: real content shown, faded, then locked behind a simple email form. If your page is missing several items on this list, that's worth fixing regardless of what tool you're using. If the gate itself is the piece you're missing, that's the specific problem this handles.
