How Long Should a Lead Magnet Be?
A lead magnet should be as short as it can be while still solving one specific problem completely. For most formats, that means something a reader can use within 15 to 30 minutes: a one or two page checklist, a template with a short guide, a 10 to 20 minute video, or a guide of around five to ten pages. Let the problem set the length.
Getting length wrong costs you in two ways. Too long, and most people never finish it, so they never experience the value that would make them trust you or buy from you. Too thin, and the reader feels short-changed, which colours how they read every email that follows. Both lead to a list that downloads and forgets.
Why shorter usually wins
People sign up for a lead magnet because they want a result soon. A long resource delays that result. A 60-page ebook might look impressive on the page, but if the reader stops at page eight, the conclusions, your method and your offer on page 55 never land.
Short resources also get used more often. A checklist pinned above someone's desk or a template they reuse each month keeps reminding them of you. A long ebook gets saved to a downloads folder and forgotten.
There are exceptions. Some buyers, particularly in B2B, expect depth before a large purchase. A detailed buyer's guide or a research report can work when the decision is big and the reader is in research mode. Even then, the useful part should be easy to find.
Length guidelines by format
Treat these as starting points.
- Checklist: one or two pages, roughly 10 to 30 items. If it runs longer, split it into sections or into two checklists.
- Cheat sheet: one page. The value is in the compression. Cheat sheet lead magnets covers how to fit a topic onto a page.
- Template: whatever the template needs, plus a short guide of one or two pages on how to use it.
- Swipe file: 10 to 50 examples, grouped so the reader can find the right one quickly.
- Guide: five to ten pages for most topics, organised so a reader can skim to the part they need.
- Workbook: eight to twelve pages, with exercises that take a few short sessions in total.
- Video or recorded workshop: 10 to 20 minutes for a tutorial, up to an hour for a workshop replay, with timestamps.
- Email course: five to seven emails, each readable in a few minutes.
- Report or buyer's guide: longer is acceptable, but include a summary page at the start.
Worked example: cutting a long guide down
Take a hypothetical interior designer whose lead magnet is "The complete guide to planning a home renovation", 42 pages long. Signups are fine, but few people mention it in calls, and almost no one replies to the welcome email.
The guide covers budgeting, choosing trades, planning permission, design styles, lighting, storage, materials and managing the build. Each topic gets a few pages.
The designer splits it into a short, focused lead magnet: "The renovation budget planner: a one-page checklist of the 18 costs most people forget, plus a budget template". It takes the most useful part of the old guide, the budgeting section, and makes it practical.
What the new version includes:
- A one-page checklist of hidden costs, such as skip hire, temporary accommodation, building control fees, contingency and making good after electrics.
- A simple budget spreadsheet with those costs already listed.
- A half-page note on how much contingency people often set aside, and why it varies.
Time to use: about 20 minutes. The rest of the old guide becomes a series of blog posts and welcome emails, and two other topics, lighting and storage, become separate lead magnets for later.
That approach is covered in more depth in splitting an ebook into lead magnets.
How to decide the right length for yours
Ask four questions.
- What one problem does it solve? If you cannot name one, it is probably trying to do too much.
- What is the least the reader needs to solve it? Remove anything that does not help with that.
- How long will it take to use? Aim for 15 to 30 minutes for most audiences.
- Does it feel complete for that one problem? If a reader would finish it and still need to look elsewhere for the basic answer, add what is missing.
Signs your lead magnet is too long
- Readers ask questions in replies that the lead magnet answers on a later page.
- The table of contents runs to more than a page.
- You find it hard to describe the content in one sentence.
- It took you more than a few weeks to write.
Signs it is too short
- It restates the headline without adding anything new.
- The reader could find the same content in the first search result.
- It lacks examples, templates or specifics that make it usable.
- Replies say "is that it?"
Length on the page itself
The page that offers the lead magnet should also be short. A headline, a sentence or two on who it is for, a preview of the content and a form. Long sales pages are rarely needed for a free resource. If you want a reference point, what is a lead magnet describes the basic structure.
Making the length visible
Tell people how long it takes. "A one-page checklist you can finish in 15 minutes" is more persuasive to busy readers than "a free guide". Time estimates set expectations and help people decide to start using it straight away.
Length for different audiences
The right length also depends on who is reading and what they are deciding.
- Busy owners and managers usually want the shortest useful version. A one-page checklist or a template tends to suit them best.
- Technical readers, such as developers or analysts, often accept more detail if it is well organised and easy to scan.
- Buyers making a large B2B purchase may expect a fuller guide, but they still appreciate a summary page they can forward to colleagues.
- Consumers on a phone, arriving from social media, respond best to something they can use on the small screen in a few minutes.
If you serve more than one of these groups, consider making two versions of the same resource: a short one for most readers and a longer one for those who want depth.
Publishing the shorter version
Once the lead magnet is the right size, the page can be equally simple. With Gatedleads, you can put the new version on its own page, live in under 10 minutes, and compare its signups with the old one.
FAQ
How many pages should a lead magnet be?
For most formats, one to ten pages. Checklists and cheat sheets work best at one or two pages, and guides at five to ten. Longer reports can work for big B2B decisions if they include a summary.
Is a longer lead magnet more valuable?
Not usually. Value comes from solving a specific problem quickly. A short resource that people finish and use tends to build more trust than a long one they abandon.
How long should a video lead magnet be?
Around 10 to 20 minutes for a tutorial, and up to an hour for a workshop replay. Add timestamps so viewers can jump to the part they need.
Should you tell people how long a lead magnet takes to read?
Yes. A time estimate, such as "15 minutes", helps busy readers decide to download it and start using it straight away.
