How to Send Lead Magnet Signups to Kit (ConvertKit) Automatically
To send lead magnet signups to Kit (formerly ConvertKit) automatically, connect your lead magnet page to Zapier with a webhook, then add a Kit action in the same Zap that adds the person as a subscriber and tags them with the lead magnet they downloaded. Each new lead then appears in Kit within moments of signing up, and the tag can start the matching welcome sequence.
Without that link, leads pile up somewhere else. You export a CSV every week or two, import it into Kit, and by then the person who downloaded your checklist has forgotten who you are. The first email they get from you arrives days later, and fewer open it. Automating the hand-off means the welcome email lands while the lead magnet is still fresh in their mind.
What you need
- A lead magnet page that can send each new lead to a webhook URL. On Gatedleads, outbound webhooks are a Pro feature.
- A Zapier account.
- A Kit account with a tag, and ideally a sequence or automation for the lead magnet.
How the route works
The flow has three parts:
- A visitor signs up on your lead magnet page.
- The page sends the lead to a Zapier webhook URL as a JSON POST.
- Zapier passes the email and name to Kit, adding the subscriber and applying a tag.
On a Gatedleads page, the webhook body includes the event name, page ID, page slug, email, name, phone, company, source and a timestamp. Fields you did not collect arrive empty. If the page uses double opt-in, the webhook fires when the visitor confirms their address. The request is sent once with a short timeout and is not retried, so if Zapier is unavailable at that moment, that lead will not reach Kit automatically, though it is still saved in your dashboard and CSV export.
The full field list and troubleshooting steps are in the Zapier integration guide.
Step 1: set up Kit first
Before touching Zapier, decide how you will organise subscribers in Kit.
- Create a tag for the lead magnet, such as "lm-onboarding-checklist". One tag per lead magnet makes it easy to see where each subscriber came from.
- Create a sequence for the lead magnet's welcome emails.
- Create an automation or rule in Kit that adds anyone with that tag to the sequence.
Setting this up first means that when Zapier tags a subscriber, the right emails start without any extra steps.
Step 2: create the Zap trigger
- In Zapier, create a new Zap.
- Choose Webhooks by Zapier as the trigger app and Catch Hook as the event.
- Copy the webhook URL Zapier gives you.
Step 3: paste the URL into your page
Open your lead magnet page in Gatedleads, go to the page settings, and paste the Zapier URL into the webhook field. Save the page. The webhook is set per page, so each lead magnet can point to its own Zap, or several can share one Zap and be told apart using the slug field.
Step 4: send a test lead
Open the published page in a private window and sign up with an address you control. Back in Zapier, test the trigger. You should see the fields from the webhook. If the page uses double opt-in, confirm the test address first.
Step 5: add the Kit action
- Add an action step and choose Kit (it may appear as Kit or ConvertKit, depending on when you set up the connection).
- Connect your Kit account.
- Choose an action that adds a subscriber with a tag, or adds a subscriber and then tags them in a second step. Action names in Zapier can change, so pick the one that matches what you set up in Step 1.
- Map the email field from the webhook to Kit's email field, and the name field to Kit's first name field.
- Select the tag for this lead magnet.
- Test the action and check that the subscriber appears in Kit with the tag.
Turn the Zap on.
Avoiding double confirmation emails
Kit can send its own confirmation email for some forms. If you also use double opt-in on your lead magnet page, subscribers might receive two confirmation emails. Choose one place to confirm. Many people confirm on the lead magnet page, so that the webhook fires only for confirmed addresses, and use a Kit action that does not trigger a second confirmation. Check your Kit settings to see which applies.

Worked example: a design studio's onboarding checklist
Take a hypothetical brand design studio with a lead magnet called "The brand project onboarding checklist: 20 things to prepare before hiring a designer".
In Kit, they create the tag "lm-brand-onboarding" and a four-email sequence:
- Email 1, sent straight away: the checklist link and one tip: "Start with the section on brand examples you like. It saves the most time later."
- Email 2, two days later: why a clear brief changes the cost of a branding project.
- Email 3, five days later: an anonymised before and after of a brief, used with the client's permission.
- Email 4, nine days later: how the studio's projects run, with a link to book a discovery call.
A Kit rule adds anyone tagged "lm-brand-onboarding" to that sequence.
In Zapier, the Zap is: Webhooks by Zapier Catch Hook, then Kit add subscriber with tag "lm-brand-onboarding". The email and name fields from the webhook are mapped to Kit.
When the studio launches a second lead magnet, a brand naming worksheet, they create a second tag and sequence and either a second Zap, or a filter step in the same Zap that checks the slug field and applies the right tag.

Handling multiple lead magnets
Two approaches work well:
- One Zap per lead magnet. Simple to understand, and each Zap applies one tag.
- One shared Zap with paths or filters. Use the slug field to decide which tag to apply. This keeps everything in one place but takes a little more setup.
For a handful of lead magnets, one Zap each is usually easier to maintain.
Backfilling earlier leads
The webhook only sends new leads. For anyone who signed up before you connected Zapier, export a CSV from your dashboard and import it into Kit with the right tag. Check for duplicates first.
Troubleshooting
- The lead is in the dashboard but not in Kit. Check the account is on Pro, the webhook URL is saved on the right page, and the Zap is on. Then check the Zap history for errors in the Kit step.
- The subscriber is in Kit but not in the sequence. Check the Kit rule that links the tag to the sequence.
- Names are missing. Make sure the page form collects a name and that it is mapped in the Kit step.
- Subscribers get two confirmation emails. Choose one place for confirmation, as described above.
Getting started
If your lead magnet page is not live yet, Gatedleads can get it live in under 10 minutes. Add the webhook once you are on Pro and the Kit connection takes a few more minutes in Zapier.
FAQ
Does Kit have a direct integration with lead magnet pages?
It depends on the page tool. A common and reliable route is a webhook from the page into Zapier, then a Kit action that adds and tags the subscriber.
How do you tag Kit subscribers by lead magnet?
Create one tag per lead magnet in Kit, and set the Zapier Kit step to apply that tag. Use the page slug to choose the tag if several pages share one Zap.
Will subscribers get a Kit confirmation email?
That depends on your Kit settings and the action you use. If your lead magnet page already confirms addresses, avoid triggering a second confirmation in Kit.
What happens if Zapier is down when someone signs up?
The webhook is sent once and not retried, so that lead will not reach Kit automatically. It is still saved in your dashboard and can be exported and imported.
