Video Lead Magnets: How to Gate a Recorded Training or Walkthrough

A recorded training, product walkthrough or tutorial is a strong lead magnet. It shows how you teach, it is easy to consume, and it is hard to copy. The practical question is how to hide it until someone gives you an email address, without letting the video leak through the back door.

This post covers what Gatedleads supports for video, the one detail that decides whether your video is truly gated, and how to build the page around it. If your video is a webinar recording, also see how to gate a webinar replay behind an email.

What video the product supports

Gatedleads has a video block you add to a page like any other block. It accepts a link to a video hosted on one of two services:

  • YouTube. A standard watch link (youtube.com/watch?v=...) or a short share link (youtu.be/...).
  • Vimeo. A standard link with the video number (vimeo.com/123456789).

The block turns that link into an embedded player on the page, with fullscreen allowed. That is the extent of it, and it is worth being clear about the limits:

  • You do not upload video files to Gatedleads. The only file you can upload for download is a PDF. The video lives on YouTube or Vimeo, and the page embeds it.
  • Other hosts are not supported as video links. A link from another video service will not be turned into a player. If your recording is somewhere else, upload it to YouTube or Vimeo first.
  • Other link types may not play. A YouTube link that is not a standard watch or share link, or a Vimeo link with extra privacy characters after the number, may not be recognised. Always test the published page.

The detail that decides whether it is really gated

Gatedleads holds back everything placed after the gate. The server only sends those blocks to the visitor once they submit the form. So a video block placed after the gate is not in the page when someone views the source before signing up. The video link is not sitting there waiting to be found.

That protects the link on your page. It does not protect the video on the video host. If the video is public on YouTube, anyone can find it by searching YouTube, and the gate is pointless.

So the video itself needs to be hard to find:

  • On YouTube, set the video to Unlisted, not Public. An unlisted video does not appear in search results or on your channel, and can be opened by anyone who has the link. That is enough for most lead magnets, because the link is only revealed after signup.
  • On Vimeo, use the privacy settings to keep the video off Vimeo's public listings. Vimeo's options vary by plan, so check what your account allows. Some privacy modes add a code to the link, and those links may not play when embedded. Test the published page after you switch the setting.

An important honest limit: once a visitor unlocks the page, they can see the video link, and they can share it. Unlisted is not the same as locked. If the content is truly sensitive or you need per-person access control, a gate on a page is not enough on its own. For most lead magnets, which are about trading value for an email, it is the right level of effort.

Step-by-step setup

  1. Upload the video to YouTube as Unlisted, or to Vimeo with suitable privacy. Wait until processing finishes and play it once to make sure it works.
  2. Create a page in Gatedleads. Write a headline that names what the viewer will learn, not just "Free Training". Headlines for a gated page has patterns.
  3. Add the content above the gate. See the next section.
  4. Place the gate after those blocks.
  5. Add the video block after the gate. Paste the YouTube or Vimeo link. Add any supporting blocks you want to appear along with it, such as a PDF of the slides.
  6. Publish. Open the page in a private window and test the whole flow.

What to put above the gate

The visitor cannot watch yet, so the page has to make a case. A few elements work well:

  • A clear promise. One sentence on what they will be able to do after watching.
  • A short list of what the video covers. Three to six bullet points, or a numbered list of the sections. Specifics persuade better than adjectives.
  • The length and format. "A 22-minute walkthrough with screen share" sets the right expectation. Be accurate. Someone who expected 5 minutes and finds 50 may feel misled.
  • Who it is for, and who it is not for. This improves the quality of your leads.
  • A free taste. You can use a second video block above the gate for a short trailer or a clip, and keep the full training after the gate. This works because blocks above the gate are free and blocks below it are held back. Keep the free clip short and genuinely useful, not just an advert.
  • Who you are, in a line or two, if the viewer may not know.

Our post on the landing page checklist gives a general structure.

Choosing a gate mode

Gatedleads has two modes. Inline shows the blocks above the gate, then the form. Squeeze shows the form before any content.

For video, inline is usually the better fit. Video is hard to judge from a headline, so a good preview does the persuading. Use squeeze mode only when the offer is so clear, and the traffic so warm, that a preview adds little, for example when you have already sold the training in an email. Inline gating versus squeeze pages explains the trade-off.

What happens after the signup

When the visitor submits the form, the video and any other gated blocks appear on the same page, straight away. They do not need to check their inbox, which matters for video because the person who gets a confirmation email later may never come back. See instant lead magnet delivery.

You can instead send people to another page after signup, such as a hosted video page of your own, by setting a redirect. If you turn on email confirmation, the visitor confirms their address before the content unlocks, which filters out fake addresses but adds a step.

Add things around the video that make it more useful once it is unlocked:

  • A summary or key takeaways in text, for people who want to skim.
  • A PDF with slides, a worksheet or a checklist, uploaded as a file block, up to 25 MB. This is a second reason to sign up and gives the viewer something to keep.
  • A clear next step, such as a link to book a call, or the next resource. Do not leave the viewer at a dead end.

Tips for the video itself

  • Get to the point early. State what the viewer will learn in the first minute.
  • Keep it as short as the content allows. Length is not value.
  • Add chapters on YouTube if the video is long, so viewers can jump to what they need.
  • Check the audio. Poor sound loses viewers faster than poor picture.
  • Do not hide the promise behind an intro. Skip long logos and music.

Track and follow up

Tag your links with UTM parameters to see which channel brings the most signups, then promote the page where it works. UTM links for lead magnets gives a naming scheme.

Gatedleads keeps your leads in the dashboard, exports a CSV on any plan, and on Pro can send each new lead to your email tool through Zapier or a webhook. It does not send follow-up emails itself, so plan where your welcome message will come from. What to send a new lead in the first 7 days is a good starting point.

FAQ

Can I upload a video file directly to Gatedleads?

No. You upload the video to YouTube or Vimeo and paste its link into a video block. The only file type you can upload for download is a PDF.

Which video links work?

Standard YouTube watch links and youtu.be links, and Vimeo links with the video number. Links from other hosts are not turned into a player, so move the recording to YouTube or Vimeo.

Is the video really private behind the gate?

The link is not sent to the visitor until they submit the form. But the video also needs to be hard to find on its host: set YouTube videos to Unlisted and check Vimeo's privacy settings. A person who unlocks the page can still share the link, so this is a lead magnet gate, not strict access control.

Can I show a free preview and gate the full video?

Yes. Put a short clip in a video block above the gate and the full video in a block below it.

Do I need Pro to gate a video?

No. Video blocks and the gate work on the Free plan, which includes one page and a small Gatedleads badge. Pro is $29 per month and adds unlimited pages, a custom domain, Zapier, A/B headline testing and removes the badge.
